Ultimate Guide to the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships

WHAT IT IS

The 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at T-Mobile Center features men's and women's gymnastics, with gymnasts in both the junior and senior divisions. Performances at the event will determine U.S. all-around and individual event national champions, as well as the national team for the junior and senior elite levels. This competition is part of the selection process for the men's and women's teams that will represent the USA at the 2019 World Gymnastics Championships.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Men's Artistic Gymnastics

There are six events in men's gymnastics including floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. The junior and senior men's division athletes will be scored over these six events on Aug. 8 and 10.

Floor Excercise: Entire floor area is used during the exercise, consisting primarily of tumbling passes performed in different directions.

Pommel Horse: Requires an enormous amount of practice to master even the most basic skills - continuous circular movements interrupted only by the required scissors elements, swinging through a handstand position, with or without turns.

Still Rings: Includes one swing to handstand and swings to strength hold elements with at least two elements of strength, one swing to strength element and the other a static strength element, must be held for two seconds during the routine.

Vault: Quick, explosive and dramatic - The height, distance of travel, overall acceleration into the vault and sudden impact of a no-step, "stuck" landing all create a good impression for the judges.

Parallel Bars: Consists mostly of swing and flight elements without stopping or holding a move more than three times during the routine while executing swinging elements from a support, hang and upper arm position.

Women's Artistic Gymnastics

There are four events in women's gymnastics including vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor excercise. The junior and senior women's division athletes will be scored over these four events on Aug. 9 and 11.

Vault: Complicated vaults are performed in different body positions, such as tucked, piked or stretched while being explosive off the springboard and forceful off the table.

Uneven Bars: Often a crowd favorite, demanding excellent upper-body strength, split-second timing and an aggressive approach.

Balance Beam: Just four inches wide, gymnasts must execute routines that give the impression that they are performing on the floor while attacking the beam with confident and demonstrating excellent height, flexibility and power.

Floor Excercise: Personalities are expressed through music choice and choreography. Gymnasts often get energy from the crowd and they usually welcome audience participation in clapping to the beat.
